Kathryn Lord is a British author and nanny. The special thing: the organizational talent has previously worked with numerous wealthy families of millionaires and even billionaires and had incredible experiences.
The British nanny, who has traveled around the world with billionaire families, tells in her latest book about the wildest things she experienced while working with the super-rich.
Who is Kathryn Lord?
Award-winning author and experienced nanny Kathryn Lord puts the child at the center of everything she does. Featured in Ok! Magazine, The Sun, Homes and Gardens, Good Housekeeping, Living etc., The Nanny Magazine and interviewed on BBC Radio London, her strength is bringing home learning to life by organizing spaces and routines.
Lord is the author of the 2019 children's textbook There's More to Books Than Reading and the 2022 book More to Organizing .
She stated in interviews and press releases that both books received tributes from the late Queen Elizabeth and Princess of Wales after she sent them copies and they responded in private letters.
Lord is considered an expert in child care , having earned a master's degree in education from Durham University and giving countless workshops on the topic. She also owes her expertise in part to her experience as a nanny (including for the aforementioned billionaire families).
Wild experiences with the super-rich – unusual insights into the everyday lives of billionaires
Lord states that working with billionaire families often involves travel and that she is flown first class to their various residences around the world with the family's private chef. Some of those jobs were long-term, she goes on to describe, including with a family where she was employed for about two and a half years and who owned homes around the world.
Others were short-term, including a two-week stay on a cruise ship in northern Europe. Lord tells us she visited South Africa, Italy, the Maldives, various remote islands and many other places during her time with these families.
The nanny now shared with Insider the wildest things she has experienced while doing this job.
No limit for the child
One such experience involved a parent once giving her credit card and telling her not to refuse anything the child asked for. This made it clear: Rich people have many worries, but money is not one of them.
Private chef and masseuse available 24/7
One family she worked for had a cook who was on call 24 hours a day, and that the family would wake them up in the middle of the night if they got hungry. They also had a private masseuse who lived nearby.
Butler service
She had to get used to being served by butlers. Lord said that some of the vacations she took with one of her clients involved being constantly attended to by butlers in every way, something she found difficult to get used to.
It was a bit strange for the nanny because she is basically there to look after the children. But she is told to sit down and let herself be served. Even if it made her uncomfortable.
What conclusion does the nanny draw from her experiences?
Looking back, Lord said she would only change one thing. In fact, she really enjoyed working for billionaire families and, looking back on the experience, there is only one thing she would change: recognizing the value of her own time.
She felt some of the families - not all - had taken advantage of her time and kindness. With some rich families she felt like she couldn't say no, so she worked longer than agreed and planned. As a result, this led to burnout and fatigue, which meant she could no longer do her job properly.
She wouldn't make that mistake again. She recently put her experiences, learnings and advice for all mothers and educators out there on paper in her new book “More to Organizing” .
